Thursday 12th Oct 23:55 Arrived safely in Helsinki, but our flight to Tampere is delayed. Friday 13th Oct 01:20AM Finally boarding our domestic flight. It seems there was a technical fault on our original plane. A new one had to be sent for from Tampere. We arrived at our hotel at ten to three Friday morning Friday 13th Oct 10:50AM.
Arrived at the ice stadium. Got my paperwork/press pass sorted out. Ticky told me the male team only had one bout yesterday, against Bulgaria, which we won 3-0, racking up 15 points to Bulgaria's 3. This set us up for the draw proper. As I arrived England were lining up against Slovakia, Having earlier despatched Poland 3-0 and 15:4. England in red (aka) Rory Daniels, Jason Ledgister and Alton Brown all win to set up a semi final meeting with old rivals France. Meanwhile the tannoy says Scotland are meeting Norway on the other tatami. In a blistering match England beat France 4-1 to set up a semifinal against Bosnia Herzegovina. A win will guarantee a medal. Rory Daniels floored his man with a head punch and for a while the Bosnian looked like he would never get up. The bout was given to Bosnia on a hansoku (disqualification). Despite sterling effort from the rest of the team Bosnia went on to win. England then faced Russia in the repechage for bronze. This time the lads came through and the cheers from the English (and the French) supporters were fantastic. Bronze medal for England! The Scottish team was denied progress by the Norwegians. In the Kata, young Samantha Cannon went out in the second round to the local girl Kulmala despite an exellent performance. Jonathan Mottram was on fine form but went out to eventual finalist Valdesi of Italy, to book a place in the repechage. In the repechage an on-form Jonathan narrowly missed ot on a medal losing to an excellent Venezualan competitor. Because Rory was knocked out in his bronze medal bout against the Russian (securing England an 8 points to nil victory in the bout) he is unable to take any further part in the tournament on health grounds. His place in the openweight is to be taken by Bakhtyar Khazaei. Saturday 14th Oct. Today is the turn of the female individuals. Emma O'Callaghan in th U53kgs went out to a Canadian in the second round. Kerry Gunn, in the U60 category also went out in round two to a strong Malaysian who went on to the quarter finals. As I was leaving Saturday evening Bakhtyar was well on his way in the male open. In his first round match he depatched his Polish opponent with relative ease 4-1

Team Canada
Met up with Canadian National coach, the wild-haired Manuel Monzon and his team at the restaurant my family dined in on Saturday.
The team included Nassim Varasteh, pictured fourth from front on the left, who took silver in the female U60kg category.

Congratulations
Ticky congratulating the male team on their bronze medal, having defeated France. Hugs all round meant that his glasses, hanging round his neck, were badly battered. A small price to pay!
